Used as a sweetener and medicine for a thousand years by Guarani natives, Stevia Rebaudiana is perhaps the only plant known to worry the sweetener industry today. Stevia leaves contain steviosides, which are chemicals that cause Stevia sweet flavour. Stevia is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar white.
In China, Korea and Japan Stevia extract stevioside is used as a tabletop sweetener because has no calories, carbohydrates and no fat and is often sweeter than sugar.
Besides being a sweetener, Stevia is considered hypoglycemic, diuretic, hypotensive patient and tonic, cardiotonic. The leaf is used for diabetes, obesity, hypertension, cavities, fatigue, depression, desires sweets and infections.

Around 1970 Japan began to prohibit the use of artificial chemical sweeteners made laboratory, due to health concerns.
